What is "core strength"? We are all familiar with this phrase, however many lack a basic understanding of what it means. Core strength refers to one's ability to co-contract muscles that support and stabilize the spine and pelvis (over 30 muscles total!) to create stability and rigidity throughout the trunk. When the spine and pelvis are stable, we are able move in a more coordinated and athletic manner. When the spine and pelvis are unstable due to a weak core, we are at greater risk for injury and poor movement quality. So how do we strengthen those all-important core muscles?
