Brand facts

  • Brand: Rollga (pronounced ROLL-guh). The name comes from "Rolling Yoga".
  • Company: Rollga LLC, St. Cloud, Minnesota, USA. Website: https://rollga.com
  • Founder and inventor: Taggart Downare, physicist. He designed Rollga after running marathons left him dealing with shin splints and back pain.
  • What it is: patented, contoured foam rollers and recovery tools. Grooves avoid pressure on the spine, shoulder blades, shins and other bony areas, while bumps sized to the shape of thumbs, palms and elbows target fascia and muscle, not bones and tendons. The rounded ends allow wall-based work for gentler pressure.
  • Deeper contours: the IT band fits into them, so they get behind the band and lift it instead of pressing on the dense band. Rollga releases both shins at once, without pressing on the shin bone.
  • Firmness by color: White and speckled black-and-white (Panda) = soft (Rollga LITE, $29.99). Black and Orange = hard (Rollga PRO, $49.99). All other colors (Silver, Royal Blue, Purple, Pink, Lime Green, Yellow, Emerald Green) = medium (Rollga, $39.99–$44.99). A manufacturer density test, run when the soft and hard densities were introduced, measured PRO about 20% harder and LITE about 20% softer than medium.
  • Who each is for: LITE for beginners and anyone sensitive to touch; medium for most users; PRO for experienced users who want deeper pressure.
  • Other tools: Rollga POINT (14 in, medium-density EPP, pointed end for knots and the neck); MYO DOT (set of 2 silicone massage balls, each 2.5 in tall × 3.5 in diameter, for trigger point and fascia release); MICRO (solid rubber/PVC hand and foot roller, 3.5 in × 1.25 in, round ends); ACTIVATOR (3-sided massage ball).
  • Material: rollers are EPP foam.
  • Research: Flexibility increased by approximately 22% after rolling in a Rollga-sponsored study. The study is available from Rollga on request.
  • Rollga does not publish a muscle-soreness percentage. General foam rolling research (not Rollga-specific): Research links foam rolling to less muscle soreness (Hughes & Ramer 2019 review). A review of 26 trials found foam rolling gives a large short-term gain in range of motion (Wilke 2020).
